Virtues of Surah al-Baqarah, Ayat-ul-Kursi and its Khawatim

PEAK OF THE QUR’AN

  • Peak of the Qur’an
  • Protection from Shaitan for three days

‘Everything has a hump (or high peak) and al-Baqarah is the high peak of the Qur’an. Whoever recites al-Baqarah at night in his house, then Shaitan will not enter that house for three nights. Whoever recites it during a day in his house, then Shaitan will not enter that house for three days.’ (Ibn Hibban)

  • Enlivens house and its members
  • Shaitan flees from house

‘Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Shaitan runs away from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited.’ (Muslim)

  • The Qur’an will intercede for its recitor with Surah al-Baqarah and Aal-e-Imran taking the lead

‘On the Day of Resurrection, the Qur’an and those who acted according to it will be brought, with Surah al-Baqarah and AaI-e-Imran preceding them.’ (Sahih Muslim)

  • Al-Baqarah and Aal-e-Imran are known as الزهراوان ‘The Two Bright Ones’
  • It will give shade to its recitor on the day of Judgement
  • It is a source of blessing
  • Leaving it is a source of grief
  • It is a protection from magicians and evil doers

‘Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the Two Bright Ones, al-Baqarah and Aal-e-Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the Batalah (magicians) cannot confront it.’ (Sahih Muslim)

  • A miraculous incident once happened to a Companion, Usayd ibn Hudayr, while he was reciting Surah al-Baqarah

…..The Prophet peace be upon him said, ‘Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared.’  (Sahih Bukhari)

  • It is the longest Surah of the Qur’an (286 Ayaat, approximately 2.5 Juz long)
  • It is the first Madinan Surah to be revealed
  • It contains many rulings of Deen
  • It is the first Surah written in the Mushaf after Surah al-Fatihah
  • It contains the most virtuous Ayah of the Qur’an: Ayat-ul-Kursi (Ayah 255)
  • It contains the longest Ayah in the Qur’an: Ayat-ul-Mudayanah (Ayah 282)
  • It contains a treasure from under the Arsh: Khawatim (last 2 Ayaat or last 3 Ayaat) of Surah al-Baqarah (Ayahs 285 and 286)
  • Its recitation develops memory, attracts the mercy of love, and is a means of immense reward

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud says, ‘Whoever recites ten Ayat from Surah al-Baqarah in a night, then Shaitan will not enter his house that night: four from the beginning (Ayah 1, 2, 3, 4), Ayat al-Kursi, the two Ayat following it (Ayah 255, 256, 257), and the last three Ayat (284, 285, 286).’ (Ibn Kathir) Abu Sanan says, ‘they will not forget the Qur’an’. Ishaq added that ‘whatever one learns, would not be forgotten’. (Darimi)

  • In summary, it is one of the greatest honours given to this Ummah

During the difficult time in the battle of Hunain, Rasulullah (peace be upon him) comforted and urged his Sahabah, by asking his uncle Abbas (who has a loud voice) to call out:  ‘O people of the Sumurah (i.e. the pledge of Ridwan)! O people of Surah al-Baqarah!’ Hearing this, the Sahabah came rallying in their droves and found victory.

When Abdullah ibn Mas’ud would teach the rites of Hajj, he would pelt the Jamarat and say, ‘This is how the one (peace be upon him) upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed would pelt.’

AYAT AL-KURSI

THE CHIEF OF ALL THE AYAAT OF THE QUR’AN

  • It is the chief of all the Ayaat in the Qur’an

‘Everything has a hump and the hump (peak) of the Quran is surah al-Baqarah. There is an Ayah in it that is the chief of all verses of the Qur’an, the Ayat al-Kursi.’ (Tirmidhi)

  • It is the greatest part of the Qur’an, and Rasulullah (peace be upon him) congratulated Ubayy ibn Ka’b for knowing that

Abu Sulayl said, A man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people until a large number had gathered around him, then he climbed onto the roof of a house and addressed the people, saying: ‘The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Which verse of the Qur’an is the greatest?’ A man said, ‘Allah! None has the right to be worshiped but He, the Ever-Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists…’ He said: He put his hand between my shoulders and I felt coolness in the centre of my chest, (or he said) he put his hand on the centre of my chest and I felt coolness between my shoulders, and he said, ‘Congratulations to you on knowledge, Abul-Mundhir (referring to Ubayy ibn K’ab, the greatest Qari of the Ummah)’.’ (Ahmed)

  • It has a special form, praising Allah, by the Arsh of Allah

‘By He in Whose Hand is my soul! This Ayah has a tongue and two lips with which it praises the King (Allah) next to the leg of the Throne.’ (Ahmed)

  • Its recitation after every Salah is a means of protection and a means of entering Jannah without reckoning
  • The one who recites its regularly is from the best of the Believers

‘The one who recites Ayat al-Kursi after the conclusion of an obligatory prayer, he is under the Care of Allah until the next prayer commences.’ (Tabarani)

‘Whoever reads Ayat-ul-Kursi, after each obligatory prayer, there is nothing which prevents him from entering Paradise except death, and it is only the Sideeq (extremely righteous) and ‘Aabid (pious worshipper) who would persist in reciting it regularly.’ (Baihaqi)

  • Its recitation before sleep is a means of protection

‘When you are about to sleep recite Ayat-ul-Kursi till the end of the verse for there will remain over you a protection from Allah and no Shaitan will draw near to you until morning.’ (Hisn-ul-Muslim)

  • Its recitation in the morning is a means of protection from harm

‘If anyone recites in the morning Ha-Mim Al-Mu’min to ‘to Him is the final goal’ (i.e. Ayah 1 to 3 of Surah Mu’min) and Ayat al-Kursi, he will be guarded by them till the evening, and if anyone recites them in the evening he will be guarded by them till the morning.’ (Tirmidhi)

  • The famous Hadith of Abu Hurairah shows that its recitation protects from Shaitan, a fact which Shaitan, the big liar, even attests to

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates,

Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) deputed me to keep Sadaqat of Ramadan. A comer came and started taking handfuls of the foodstuff. I took hold of him and said, ‘By Allah, I will take you to Allah’s Apostle.’ He said, ‘I am needy and have many dependents, and I am in great need.’ I released him, and in the morning Allah’s Apostle asked me, ‘What did your prisoner do yesterday?’ I said, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! The person complained of being needy and of having many dependents, so, I pitied him and let him go.’ Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Indeed, he told you a lie and he will be coming again.’ I believed that he would show up again as Allah’s Apostle had told me that he would return. So, I waited for him watchfully. When he started stealing handfuls of foodstuff, I caught hold of him again and said, ‘I will definitely take you to Allah’s Apostle.’ He said, ‘Leave me, for I am very needy and have many dependents. I promise I will not come back again.’ I pitied him and let him go. In the morning Allah’s Apostle asked me, ‘What did your prisoner do.’ I replied, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! He complained of his great need and of too many dependents, so I took pity on him and set him free.’ Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Verily, he told you a lie and he will return.’ I waited for him attentively for the third time, and when he (came and) started stealing handfuls of the foodstuff, I caught hold of him and said, ‘I will surely take you to Allah’s Apostle as it is the third time you promise not to return, yet you break your promise and come.’ He said, ‘(Forgive me and) I will teach you some words with which Allah will benefit you.’ I asked, ‘What are they?’ He replied, ‘Whenever you go to bed, recite Ayat-ul-Kursi– ‘Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-l-Haiy-ul Qaiyum’ till you finish the whole Ayat. (If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you and no Shaitan will come near you till morning.’  So, I released him. In the morning, Allah’s Apostle asked, ‘What did your prisoner do yesterday?’ I replied, ‘He claimed that he would teach me some words by which Allah will benefit me, so I let him go.’ Allah’s Apostle asked, ‘What are they?’ I replied, ‘He said to me, ‘Whenever you go to bed, recite Ayat-ul-Kursi from the beginning to the end —- Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-lHaiy-ul-Qaiyum—-.’ He further said to me, ‘(If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you, and no Shaitan will come near you till morning.’ (Abu Hurairah or another sub-narrator) added that they (the Sahaba) were very keen to do good deeds. The Prophet said, ‘He really spoke the truth, although he is an absolute liar. Do you know whom you were talking to, these three nights, Oh Abu Hurairah?’ Abu Hurairah said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘It was Shaitan.’ (Sahih Bukhari)

KHAWATIM SURAH AL-BAQARAH

  • It is a great treasure from under the Arsh of Allah, especially given to this Umman only

Ayfa’ told of a man who asked Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) which Surah of the Qur’an was greatest and was told that it was ‘Say, He is Allah, One.’ He asked which verse of the Qur’an was greatest and was told that it was Ayat-ul-Kursi, ‘Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal.’ He asked Allah’s Prophet which verse he would like to bring good to him and his people and was told, ‘The end of Surah al-Baqarah, for it is one of the treasures of Allah’s mercy from under His throne, which He gave to these people, and there is no good in this world and the next, which it does not include.’ (Tirmidhi)

  • It will suffice him against worries and problems
  • It will suffice him as protection from Shaitan
  • It will suffice him as reward of Qiyam-ul-Layl
  • It will suffice him as a means of reward
  • It will suffice him as reward of reciting a lot of Qur’an

“If somebody recited the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah at night that will be sufficient for him.” (Bukhari)

  • It will be a protection from Shaitan

‘Indeed Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and He sent down two Ayat from it to end Surah al-Baqarah with. If they are recited for three nights in a home, no Shaitan shall come near it.’ (Tirmidhi)

  • It is a special Dua

‘I was given the Khawatim (ending Ayat) from Surah Al-Baqarah from the treasure that is just beneath the Throne that was not given to a Prophet before me.’ (Ahmed)

It is narrated in Sahih Muslim that when Allah revealed:

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is over all things capable.

The Companions of the Messenger were distressed by that. They came to the Messenger and knelt down and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have been enjoined to do deeds that we are able to do, such as Salaah, Fasting, Jihaad, and Charity. But now this verse has been revealed to you, and we cannot bear its burden.’  So the Messenger said: ‘Do you mean to say what the People of the two Revealed Books before you said: ‘We hear and we disobey (sami’naa wa ‘asaynaa)?’ Rather you should say:

سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ

We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.

When the people started saying that and it flowed easily upon their tongues, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed:

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say, We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.

When they did that, Allah, the Most High, abrogated it, and so revealed:

لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا

Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.

So Allah says (in response to the Dua): ‘Yes (na’am).’

Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us.

So Allah says: ‘Yes.’

And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

So Allah says: ‘Yes.’

In one narration of Sahih Muslim it is mentioned that, Allah says: ‘I have done so (qad fa’altu).’
